This new blog is 100% free and fun, and where I'll share tips and ideas on having light conversations with customers and colleagues. Whether you're looking for some ideas for chats to have whilst serving customers in your role of a checkout operator, or some inspiration when standing in queues or meeting up with friends, I hope you'll find Checkout Chats a familiar place to head!

I really value and love retail workers and healthcare workers who are smiley, chatty and bubbly - I believe you do a wonderful job putting smiles on our faces everyday...something a self service machine cannot (although if I haven't been told "please place the item in the bagging area" I do feel a sense of fulfillment) and us Checkout Chums should be celebrated! I was inspired to start this site after I was "served" by a grumpy woman who ignored my 'hello' and 'thanks' and stared at me, put her hand out for money, then walked off when she had given me change. I was appalled.

So please, do send your comments and views on chats at the checkout (and any other place, for that matter) with the ambition of making someone feel valued and bring a smile to their face as they pick up the paper and a pint of milk. Let's celebrate those heroes, those familiar faces, who come rain or shine are ready to tell us about what they are having for tea tonight, or what the weather is doing. Customer Service with a smile is the way forward!
