3.9 million tune in to see Ed Sheeran and Pharrell Williams pick up top gongs at BBC Music Awards

3.9 million people watched the first ever BBC Music Awards last night, according to overnight viewing figures, which saw Ed Sheeran and Pharrell Williams among the big winners.

Sheeran, who also performed his hit single Sing at the bash, took the prize for Best British Act of the year, whilst Pharrell Williams scooped the award for Best International Artist.

Pharrell also won Song of the Year for his International hit 'Happy'. Viewing figures for the show peaked at 21.00, with an audience of 4.7 million, which was when Pharrell was collecting his award.

The live show - the first ever BBC Music Awards - was broadcast on the BBC's flagship channel, in addition to being live on BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 2. There were performances from One Direction, Clean Bandit and Gregory Porter.
