That's what I call a show! London puts on a spectacular display to welcome in 2015

  • London welcomes in the New Year with an explosive display Picture Special Below
  • Mayor of the city thanks "all who made it safe and fun"
  • Global celebrations saddened after 35 are killed at New Year's celebration in China

London welcomed in 2015 in spectacular style last night, with millions tuning in to watch the UK's annual fireworks show.

After Big Ben chimed in the new year, the iconic London skyline exploded into a dazzling array of colour, with eleven minutes of spectacular fireworks.

Also included in the display was a poignant tribute to the First World War, with fireworks representing poppies lighting the night sky.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said the fireworks were a "wonderful way" to welcome in the New Year, thanking "all who made it such a safe and fun event". It was the first year that paid ticketing had been introduced to watch the display, angering many.

Although there was celebration around the World to mark in the New Year, there was tragedy in China after 35 people were killed and dozens more injured in a stampede at New Years celebrations in Shanghai. The stampede is reported to have started after fake money was dropped from above a large crowd, who went to try and grab the cash.
